Cardio HB® is a standardized full-spectrum hibiscus extract. For generations people believed that hibiscus tea had medicinal effects in particular, lowering moderately high-blood pressure and reducing cholesterol. The species most identified with these benefits is hibiscus sabdariffa. Recently and study was conducted at Tuft’s University demonstrating that subjects with mild hypertension who took three cups of strong hibiscus tea per day, saw a significant reduction in their blood pressure. However, it is not always convenient or desirable to drink strong tea three times per day, every day.
A number of independent clinical studies were also conducted using hibiscus sabdariffa extract specifically extracted from the plant calyx (flowering portion). This was a full spectrum extract, meaning that is contained all of the active ingredients in the tea, and none of the unnecessary ingredients such as the organic sugars, or taste compounds. The results were impressive: Using samples of about forty subjects the researchers found an 11.5% reductions in blood pressure and a 12% reduction in serum cholesterol. The key ingredients in hibiscus found also in Cardio HB are the anthocyanins and polyphenols. Many extracts on the market claim to have these compounds, but after testing, BioActives found only one product that had the same amount of these compounds at that used in the studies. Further Cardio HB has exactly the same analytical profile as the extract used in the studies – meaning it has the same active ingredient in the right proportions. Based upon the analytical and clinical studies 160 mg of the extract is recommended twice daily for optimal results.
