BioActives just completed a clinical study of their MicroActive MelatoninSR formulation. The study indicated that the formulation supported a natural sleep cycle, helping to fall asleep and stay asleep, waking up in 7 to 8 hours. Further results indicated that MicroActive MelatoninSR supported melatonin levels in the cycle starting at 1 hour and falling off in 7 hours. The immediate release Melatonin, by comparison, reached the threshold level in 30 minutes, with a sharp peak at 1 hour falling off in 4.5 hours prior to the a natural 7 yo 8 hours.
MicroActive MelatoninSR lengthened the release of melatonin and also prolonged the half-life compared to the immediate release product. In the initial phase (0 -3hr), the plasma concentration of melatonin with the MicroActive MelatoninSR was lower as compared to that with the immediate release Melatonin. However, in the delayed phase (4–8 hr.), the plasma concentration of MicroActive MelatoninSR was higher as compared to that of immediate release Melatonin. MicroActive MelatoninSR did not show a sharp peak concentration but showed a gradual increase in the plasma levels with a maximum plasma level around 4 hours and a gradual decrease by 8 hours, which supports staying asleep.
